Kingfisher inspired Mother’s Day Card

WPlus9 A New Day Zig Clean Color Real Brush Markers

Hi everyone! In January I made a couple of cards with the WPlus9 stamp called “A New Day” (you can find that post, where I made a chickadee and a robin, here: http://www.makeyourlifecolourful.com/single-post/2017/01/08/WPlus9-birds-with-Zig-Clean-Color-Markers ). Today I used the same stamp but with the colours of a different bird in mind: the kingfisher. And, as you can see it's a Mother's Day card!

Let me start by saying that I have never used feathers on a card in my whole life, these feathers were sitting in my craft stash for over 10 years, can you believe that! And today was the first time I thought that feathers could fit the design I had in mind!

I started this card by stamping the bird image on Strathmore Bristol Smooth Surface paper with Versafine “Onyx Black” ink and heat embossing with clear embossing powder. I used my Zig Clean Color Real Brush Markers to colour today’s image. If you want to learn more about Zig Clean Color Real Brush Markers then I refer to the post mentioned above where I made the cards with the chickadee and the robin. For the kingfisher inspired bird I used the following Zig Markers: Beige, Brown, Dark Brown, Dark Gray, Turquoise Green and Persian Green. Other colours I used Orange, Dark Oatmeal, Ochre and Mid Brown.

For the background around the bird and the edge of the die cut I used Sugared Almond Pink: I know that’s a strange colour to choose for my background but somehow I felt like it, so I did (because of the turquoise I felt Light Blue was not the right colour and when holding the bird next to my Zig Marker colour chart I stopped at Sugared Almond Pink and I felt it suited the Mother’s Day theme I was going for, so pink it is!). I used the MFT “Stitched Rectangle Stax” die (the biggest die from this set) to die cut the rectangle.

For the turquoise background I used a matching piece of card stock and I stamped the Hero Arts’ “Etched Bouquet” background stamp several times with Ranger’s “Perfect Medium” and my MISTI and then I added Perfect Pearls in the colours “Mandarin”(dominant colour) and “Perfect Gold” (just a little). I set the Perfect Pearls with a little spray mist of water.

Since I only have one sentiment stamp that is suitable for Mother’s Day and that letter type didn’t fit this card I decided I would make my own. A couple of years ago I bought a clear alphabet stamp set from a Etsy shop called Tonjatreasures which features uppercase and lowercase letters in the same set. I don’t know if she still sells these. I stamped each letter individually.

Then I used the middle size banner from the “Everyday Sentiment Banners” set from Lawn Fawn to die cut the sentiment. To make the banner a little more contrasting I edged with Memento’s “Lilac Posies” and “Angel Pink”. As you can see in the picture I folded the banner on the left hand site, around the bird piece, to make the size more suitable for this particular card.

To put this card together I used 1 mm thick foam-tape for the turquoise background after adding the pink ribbon ( I used a light pink card base with a little shimmer to it ).

Then I had this great idea to ad the feathers, they match the colour theme since they are very light turquoise and also the bird theme I had going. But how to stuck these feathers down? I tried regular tape but that didn’t work to well in all the places it needed adhesive. So I tried my trust-full Ranger Medium Matte since I figured I needed a lot and when it leaked out it would dry matte. Well, it adhered the feathers well but it also stuck to pieces of feather I didn’t wanted it to stick to! To cover up the not so nice pieces of feather I decided to ad some sequins in matching colours of pink and then put something heavy on the card to let it dry, in the end it worked out just fine (but it wasn’t easy)!

And that already finishes this lovely Mother's Day card!

Do you use feathers on your cards? How do you adhere them?

Now I will go and find an envelope that is big enough for this card, so the feather’s don’t get crushed in the mail.
