Hi everyone, today I’m on The Crafter’s Workshop blog with a summer and sea inspired art journal page! Today I’m working in my 13 x 21 cm Art Plus Moleskine Sketchbook (I keep an empty page between two used pages, when the project is finished I glue them together, this way anything bleeding through won’t damage a previous project and when you want to poke a hole in the page you can).
The Crafter’s Workshop provided me with some product to create this project. The opinions I share are solely my own.
Since I’m working with Dylusions Paints for my base I don’t need to prime my page, these paints work best without a layer of gesso underneath. I started by mixing Dylusions Paints in the colours “Fresh Lime“ and “Vibrant Turquoise“ on the page with a foam applicator tool.
When I was happy with the way this looked I added my background design using the gorgeous The Crafter’s Workshop stencil called “Circle of Jewels“ (TCW757s) and the same paint colours as before but them adding them in reverse. You only need a tiny little bit of paint for this to work. Work the paint in the foam applicator tool on a craft sheet, dab of on a paper kitchen towel and then apply over the stencil. If you apply too much the paint will seep underneath the stencil. When the pain was almost dry I used my foam applicator tool to create the illusion of vertical lines and dimming the colours down a little, like an underwater scene.
Then I added some white dots to the scene, like underwater bubbles, using a The Crafter’s Workshop stencil called “Ombre Dots“ (TCW2165) and a tiny bit of Dylusions Paint in the colour “White Linen“.
My next step is to draw in the beautiful mermaid design: for this I used a The Crafter’s Workshop stencil called “Mermaid Dreams“. I draw in all the lines with a graphite pencil and then went of the lines with a black Faber Castell PITT Artist Pen (S). The stencil gives you all the lines that you need you only have to connect some lines to make it more a drawing then a stencilled design.
I also pencilled in the title in the same way using a calligraphy style that I taught myself as a child.
Now it’s time to start painting in the stencilled design, you can make this as detailed as you like! I painted until I was happy with the results. I used the following colours of acrylic paint: Dylusions Paint in the colour “Funky Fuchsia“. Van Gogh acrylic paint in the colour “Raw Umber“. DecoArt Americana acrylic paint in the colours: “Petal Pink“, “White Peach“, “Warm Beige“, “Light Buttermilk“, “Marigold“, “Moon Yellow“, “Sable Brown“ and “Light Cinnamon“.
When I was happy and the paint was dry I added in some details with a white Gelly Roll pen.
And to finish this fun art journal page I edged the page with a little Archival Ink in the colour “Sepia“ and a foam applicator tool to define the edges of the page a bit more.
I had so much with these gorgeous stencils and bright colours!
Bring on the Summer, because I'm totally in the mood now!
