Fairy Maya with Coloured Pencils

7 Aug 2018

Hi everyone, today I have another card for you using one of the gorgeous Whimsy Stamps fairies: this one is called “Maya”. I was cleaning up my computer and came across this card that I apparently never had published!

So let’s get started: I first stamped her on some Strathmore “Drawing” paper (not my favourite paper for coloured pencil by the way) with Versafine “Onyx Black” ink and then started colouring her with my Faber Castell Polychromos coloured pencils.

I used the following colours:

For the yellow/orange parts: 102, 109 and 115;

For the warm grey tones: 271 and 272;

For the olive green parts: 168 and 173;

For her hair: 180 and 176;

For her skin: 132;

A little 146 (Sky Blue) around the image to make her stand out more from the background.

And 101 (White) to burnish.

Next I die cut the image with one of the square Crea-Nest-Lies XXL nesting dies and edges with Memento’s “Bamboo Leaves”.

Then it’s time to build the rest of the card: I wanted to keep the colours neutral because the coloured image is fairly light and I didn’t wanted to distract too much from the fairy. So I choose a couple of card stock mats in matching colours to create dimension and a few embellishments to create more interest.

I used a dark craft coloured card base and die cut a matching square as a mat for my fairy piece from the same kraft card stock with a stitched square Crea-Nest-Lies XXL die, one size bigger then the square from the regular nesting die set that I used for my fairy. I edged the kraft coloured pieces with Distress Ink in the colour “Vintage Photo”. I also die cut a piece of blueish/purplish card stock in about the same colour as the blue coloured pencil I used and edged this square with Distress Ink in the colour “Shaded Lilac”. I adhered these mats together with liquid glue.

I felt that the background also needed a little more green but without being distracting so I choose a bigger square die cut mat in a nice fresh green colour card stock that I edged with the same Bamboo Leaves ink that I used before. I also die cut a one size smaller square mat then the big green piece from a muted dusty orange piece of card stock and stamped the Hero Arts background stamp called “Etched Bouquet” on this card stock with Distress Ink in the colour “Rusty Hinge” and I also edged this card stock piece with this ink. I adhered this orange background piece and the biggest green square both together and on the base card with liquid glue.

Then it’s time for the embellishments: I punched a border from a piece of card stock in a lighter peach/orange colour with a EK Success punch called “Groovy Flower” and edged with Memento’s “Tangelo” ink. I adhered this border on the background I already created and then foam taped the smaller square die cut mats with the fairy on top with one millimetre thick foam tape.

For my sentiment I die cut the Simon Says Stamp “Smile Circle” die from the same light peach/orange card stock and edged with the same Tangelo ink as I used before and I also stamped one of the sentiments from a stamp set from Kennedy Grace Creations called “Grace’s little note” (I cut one stamp in two with my scissors) on the dark craft card stock from before with Versamark ink and heat embossed with Wow! “Opaque Vanilla White” embossing powder. Now the sentiment reads: Smile it’s your day. I glued the combined sentiment on with Ranger Medium Matte. I feel this sentiment compliments this fairy so well!

For the final finishing touches on this cute fairy card I glued on some flat backed pearls in a very light green colour on the punched flower border and I put some Stickles in the colour “Diamond” on the fairies wings with an old brush (I love to do that on fairy wings) and that finishes today’s card.

Hope you enjoyed!

I would like to submit this card to the following challenge:
